OSTEOPATHY

What is osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a form of hands on manual medicine, we use our hands to move, stretch and manipulate the body to find balance. Osteopathy Australia states that ‘Each injury is unique so osteopathic treatment will vary from person to person. Osteopaths assess the mobility of problem areas, ask you questions and make a diagnosis to work out the best treatment plan for each patient.’ At the Osteopathic Clinic Altona we tailor the treatment to your condition, more importantly we treat the cause of your particular symptoms and not necessarily the site of your pain.

OSTEOPATHY

What should I expect

It is important to know that sometimes osteopaths require you to disrobe to your underwear for the osteopathic examination and treatment. This is to ensure we can examine the body to the fullest. Osteopaths are holistic practitioners which means we see and treat the body as a whole. For example you may have a complaint affecting your elbow however we may need to look at your neck and upper back which would require you to remove your top layer of clothing.

We do provide gowns for your use or feel free to bring along bike shorts if this will make you feel more comfortable. As osteopaths are primary health care practitioners it is important we recognise and acknowledge any skin lesions that may help us identify certain conditions which may have an effect on the musculoskeletal system. Osteopathy is a hands on manual therapy as stated previously, therefore we use our hands to manipulate and treat the muscles and joints of the body as we strive for balance between these systems.
